“Healthy & Hopeful Lifestyle” E-book Series contain specific restorative yoga poses that assist in breast cancer post - surgical recovery, fatigue and lymphedema management. Also included is a breathing exercise which is an essential tool for reduction of stress, anxiety and depression. Complementary Therapies are suggested to further enhance healing.

Purpose of Twists

Twists can boost energy when feeling tired or fatigued. When we twist, we literally squeeze tension and toxins out from the body. In twisting poses, our muscles have an opportunity to squeeze and relax, and once finished, the area that released will then experience a rush of blood and nutrients.

Twists Yoga Poses for Recovery

Twists are valuable for supporting breast cancer recovery and for the repairing of breast tissue. Lateral movements that are inherent with twists encourage the lymph fluid away from the tissues toward lymph nodes which then circulate the fluid to functioning lymph vessels. If the lymph system cannot effectively drain, lymphedema may result.

Yoga Breathing to Raise Energy Levels for Breast Cancer Patients

by Diana Ross on 04/04/11

Today the typical way of raising our energy level is through caffeinated drinks and sugary foods.  It has been proven that using these products to remedy our energy lows are an obvious health detriment.  And, ultimately after the temporary high or boost is over we are left even more drained.  Now let’s add on the fact that when you have an illness like breast cancer these ways of raising our energy is truly unproductive.

Let’s look at how we can get a natural boost of energy that supports health: one that instantly provides a renewed vitality and clarity of mind. It is as simple as learning to breath properly and consciously.

Our breath is our key to life.  It is known that a person can live days without water, and longer without food.  However, the moment we become oxygen deprived, our bodies immediately begin to die.  Stating the obvious, breathing is by far the most immediate and important essential element to life.

“Take a deep breath” is a statement that is often heard when someone becomes upset or over excited.   Heart palpitations, and high blood pressure are the symptoms of this agitation. Combating the treatments that come with strains, stresses and discomfort; one can learn how to breath to reduce theses problems and replace them with renewed energy. Now THIS would be productive.  When we consciously approach this stress and strain with our breath it allows us to refocus and quiet down. All that is needed is the understanding and development of simple breathing techniques. Breathing techniques are highly sought after and recommended for just these reasons alone.  The overall effect of many breathing practices help the body and mind create a calming down effect called a “relaxation response”. This again will allow for the mind to become clearer, and more reflective.  When recovering from cancer breathing is instrumental to support our health and well-being.  Breath in, breath out and rest is the goal.

A Flowing Yoga to Keep Lymph Fluid Flowing

by Diana Ross on 03/31/11

Practicing  continuous flowing movements has a positive impact on the lymphatic system, and in particular Lymphedema. When lymph fluid is disrupted through breast cancer surgery, trauma or infection there may be an excessive fluid build up.  This stagnant fluid can play havoc on the tissues and create swelling. There also can be a reduction of the oxygen intake or absorption to the lymphatic system; all of which increases the chance for infection. Practicing a flowing yoga keeps the lymphatic fluid pumping throughout the body’s channels, rather than accumulating or backing up. It is great for maintaining healthy breast tissue.  To keep this fluid moving, we need to also foster relaxation. It will facilitate renewed or restored strength, and flexibility.  Flowing yoga movements develop a supple spine and a strong nervous system so when the nervous system is in balance the parasympathetic and sympathetic system work together creating great calm.  When flowing in the practice the poses encourage digestion, assimilation and elimination.  The body’s immune system is stimulated to maintain health. When flowing from a backward bend to a forward bend, the spine will roll vertebra by vertebra, either in an ascending or descending order, while following the natural wave of the spine.  Here it will recognize naturally that a backbend (extension) will flow from a forward bend (flexion) and vice versa.

The Power of The Prop

by Diana Ross on 02/25/11

The Power of the Props
The use of yoga props develops an awareness and encourages us to pay attention to the core of our being instead of merely the outer self (the physical self). Through a series of yogic breathing techniques and restorative flows there comes a feeling of profound physical and emotional unfurling, as though the body was unfolding and extending for the first time when we experience the support of the props. The props allow the body to be guided into place, and will then reveal the held stress and tensions.

Anti-Cancer Tea

by Diana Ross on 02/07/11

Good Reason to Drink Herbal Tea
Came across this article on the web.
Drinking both green and black teas can help you live longer, according to a wealth of worldwide research. A 2009 study of 2,000 Chinese women suggested that drinking green tea regularly (and eating a diet rich in mushrooms) may cut cancer risk by 90 percent, while a study of over 40,000 Japanese men and women showed that those who drank five or more cups of green tea daily had the lowest chances of dying from stroke or heart disease. The caffeinated drink has high levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants (a cup contains can be as packed with antioxidants as a serving of fresh spinach). Meanwhile, black tea, which has antioxidants, too, offers its own benefits. Over 15 years, researchers recorded the tea-drinking habits of 60,000 Swedish women, ages 40 to 76. Some drank at least two cups of tea per day, while others drank less than a one cup per month. The regular tea-drinkers had a 46 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer. Experts recommend drinking at least two cups a day of the stuff you brew yourself (bottled teas seem to lose their health benefits).

Essiac Tea Cancer Fighting Abilities Explained

by Diana Ross on 12/31/10

The efficacy of essiac against cancer can be partially explained by the cancer-fighting characteristics of herbs in the formula. Red clover contains compounds that may keep estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. Burdock root reduces the rate at which estrogen is reabsorbed into the bloodstream after it has been processed by the liver. The emodin found in rhubarb root greatly enhances the cure rate of conventional chemotherapies, notably Adriamycin, Platinol, Rubex, and Taxol. The aloe emodin found in sheep sorrel is effective, at least in laboratory studies, against leukemia cells. A report in the August 2004 edition of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine suggests that the greatest benefit of essiac may be found in treating prostate cancer, more specifically prostate cancer in men with compromised immune systems. Essiac tea has a mild and pleasant taste, although some of its herbs can aggravate certain pre-existing conditions. Information provided by Maintain Rose Herbs.

The Story Behind Essiac Tea

by Diana Ross on 12/31/10

Essiac was promoted and popularized by a Canadian nurse named Rene M. Caisse, who named the formula with her last name spelled backwards. Born in 1888, Rene Caisse promoted the use of her tea in the treatment of a steady stream of cancer patients until her death in 1978 at the age of ninety. Rene Caisse's cancer cure was used by persons with prostate cancer, advanced bladder cancer, and advanced breast cancer who are documented to have gone into remission. Mammogram's Save Lives Early Detection is Key

by Diana Ross on 10/27/10

What is your reason for not getting a mammogram? Well, whatever it is, it is not a good one. There is no good reason to avoid regular mammograms or annual breast screening.

  • Women should have an annual mammograms after age 40
  • Mammograms save lives
  • Mammograms provide the best tool for early detection
  • MRI provide insight to an individual's breast health

Women explain the quite unreasonable reason why they put off getting a mammogram is because they don't want to find out they have cancer.
