  1. How did Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy become what they are today? Today more and more complementary therapies are being re-introduced into the healthcare industry, and those two therapies are herbal medicine and aromatherapy. Our pharmacology is based on plant extracts so why not reach back, or forward to be closer to nature or natural? Aromatherapy is well known for its affects on moods, colds, illnesses, ailments and the like.
  2. Which herbs/aromas help with what symptoms? Peppermint and ginger is well known for reducing nausea and stomach upset. Chamomile and hops for insomnia, green tea for antioxidants. The list goes on. Each plant brings something special to the health table. Essaic tea has so many ingredients to help prevent cancer.
  3. Can it help women to take preventative measures against terminal illness (such as breast cancer)? This question answers itself. Prevention is the key. Just like echinacea helps in the prevention of colds and flu. There is so much we can do through eating, applying or drinking the essence of plants especially if they are deep green.
  4. If so, what are some examples of herbal medicine used for prevention? Some believe a diet rich in antioxidants helps prevent cancer. Red clover is another herbal option for the prevention of cancer. It has been found to be effective in preventing the formation of tumors. Dandelion root has been recognized in that it kills melanoma cells while keeping healthy cells intact.
  5. Can it help to cure women already diagnosed with breast cancer? Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.?Once you have a diagnosis of breast cancer the time is perfect to act.  The cure is in the prevention but it does help with slowing down the disease and in the recovery.
  6. If so how? The most famous cancer herbal preparations are probably the Hoxley formula and Essiac. Many people began seeking out holistic cancer remedies in the early ‘80s when it became apparent that Western medicine was not curing cancer. The growing number of people diagnosed with cancer, became quite desperate because traditional medicine had failed them. It was then that many people sought out herbal cancer cures and other forms of natural medicine, and many people with terminal diagnosis did indeed live, curing their cancer, or living for years past the doctors’ predictions.

These questions will be answered by Diana Ross- Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher, breast cancer survivor and the founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.

Use Aromatherapy - Healthy Tips For Breast Cancer

by Diana Ross on 01/04/13

10 Healthy Tips For Well-being
TIP FIVE
Use Aromatherapy
The research continues to prove the undeniable value of aromatherapy in our wellness and well being. Essential oils are extracted from various types of plants, shrubs, trees, flowers and herbs. Many holistic and natural health practitioners believe that essential oils have a variety of healing and medicinal properties. Topically, many solutions composed of essential oils used in aromatherapy massage are being used today in oncology units. Aromatherapy not only enliven our senses, but they also have antifungal, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. They work topically or as an inhalant which then stimulate the immune system to attack harmful bacteria, virus and fungi and further promote healing. Roman chamomile is an excellent oil option for treating dry and sensitive skin. When used on a regular, daily basis it reduces the itchiness, irritation, inflammation, redness and dryness that often accompanies sensitive skin. Lavender essential oil has a soothing and balancing effect on the skin. Lavender hydrosol is thought to have a cooling and soothing effect on sunburns or skin irritations, and it smells so relaxing. Aromatherapy can help you navigate the terrain of your healing journey from surviving to thriving during cancer recovery. Lavender hydrosol can be applied daily to skin to help soothe the mind, body & spirit.

Try To Eat A Plant Based Diet - Healthy Tips For Breast Cancer

by Diana Ross on 01/04/13

10 Healthy Tips For Well-being
TIP THREE
Try To Eat A Plant Based Diet
Your diet really does make a difference when it comes to breast cancer prevention and recovery. A plant based diet should be a fundamental part of a healthy cancer free lifestyle. Make your diet rich in organic fruits and vegetables that are full of micronutrients and bioflavonoids which are duly noted to help prevent breast cancer or other cancers. Five or more servings per day is recommended by the American Cancer Institute. Red and blue berries hold a significant amount of the necessary cell builders and anti-carcinogenic  properties that are necessary on our tables. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and bok choy are just a few vegetables that are loaded with micronutrients.  They all contain vitamins and minerals, and fiber; all are important to your health (some having more importance than others).

Learn How To Breathe - Healthy Tips For Breast Cancer

by Diana Ross on 01/04/13

Ten Healthy Tips For Well-being
TIP TWO
Learn How to Breathe
Deep breathing is vital; it encourages the release of body toxins, and rebuilds healthy tissue. It is as simple as oxygen helping to nourish the body, the muscles, and organs which then provides relief from stress, fear and anxiety. Slow, deep, and relaxed breaths calms the autonomic nervous system, (ANS) producing a balanced stable energy and builds the body’s immune function. Make a conscious decision to start with 5 to 10 minutes a day of simple deep breathing. Breathing is an important aspect of lymphedema management too. Slow deep breaths, with breath retention create pressure changes that empty the lymphatic system into the nervous system at the thoracic ducts and clear the lymphatic pathways. Simple practices like counting each exhale develops concentration, or using a Sun Moon breath w ill make a difference in stress levels by balancing the right and left hemisphere of the brain.  Learning how to come into synch with each breath allows for the “fight-or-flight” response to move to a “relaxation response.” Breathing and relaxation may offer another self management tool for lymphedema too.

Start a Yoga Practice - Healthy Tips For Breast Cancer

by Diana Ross on 01/04/13

Ten Healthy Tips For Well-being
Tip One
Start a Yoga Practice
Gentle or restorative yoga poses can be very healing if done with care and awareness. Once you receive clearance from your doctor to begin exercise, a gentle or restorative yoga practice may be very healing in stretching the area of the incision, the calming down of the stress attached to the surgery as well as bringing the ROM, (range of motion) back to the entire area of the chest. Start with gentle restorative yoga stretching so you can develop an understanding or a heightened awareness of boundaries and limitation to the stretching.  No weight bearing in your arms in the beginning. Begin with simple movements with arms, and shoulders so that the ROM, (range of motion) occurs naturally. It might be felt as a slight pulling sensation but NEVER pain.  A Breast Cancer Yoga practice will strengthen the body, relax the muscles, calm the mind, speed healing and create positive emotions. The most important thing to understand when practicing yoga is that you will need to progress slowly; listen carefully to what your body is telling you.  Anytime you overwork your muscles you run the risk of the lymph fluid being backed up and causing pain and swelling.   Remember that YOU are responsible for your healing process and progress.

Where Do You Begin Yoga?

by Diana Ross on 10/30/12

Where Do You Begin?
Not everyone is disciplined enough to do their yoga at home and others thrive with a home routine. There are some easy suggestions on how to start a yoga practice with this understanding of differences. Start slow, make sure you create a practice that can grow as you regain strength and stamina.

  • Find a place at home that is quiet and well ventilated.
  • Set a time each day or every other day that encourages a routine.
  • Find a competent yoga teacher that teaches to the cancer community or a special breast cancer yoga DVD.
  • Dress comfortably, there should be no constriction for the breath.
  • Eat a light breakfast at least a hour beforehand.

Don’t Be Hard On Ourself Just Persevere
It does get easier, and it is important to manage a self care practice. One of the many benefits of yoga therapy is that the practice awakens positive emotions, builds self-confidence and reduces depression. There is an openness of spirit that leads to greater understanding when the practice of yoga is embraced. This all can be achieved but there must be determination and fortitude.

Yoga Can Be a Lot of Fun

Enjoy every deep, slow breath while moving your arms, legs and torso. It is so important to evenly pace the movement with the breath. The breath is key to your wellness. It too balances the mind, body and spirit. It is the cosmic gas station.  “If the mind wanders the breath will follow.” Take it slow, take a big conscious breath, come into the present moment and just Be.

Yoga Decreases Stress Hormones

by Diana Ross on 10/30/12

It is well documented that yoga decreases stress hormones, like cortisol and increases GABA (gamma-Aminonbutyric acid) levels. GABA is an important calming chemical produced by the brain that counteracts anxiety and stress.
  • GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter chemical in the brain.
  • GABA is responsible for balancing mood levels. It is believed that certain physical reaction disorders are due to the failure to produce adequate levels of GABA.
  • Through brain imaging it has been shown that a restorative yoga practice increases GABA levels markedly.
  • When GABA levels are maintained with breast cancer patients, physical stamina increases. Daily activities like climbing stairs, walking and doing the laundry become easier compared with those that don’t engage in a yoga practice or exercise.
  • GABA is very important for sustained recovery and optimal health.
Stress reduces the levels of GABA in our brains. The primary stress hormones, which inhibits GABA levels are cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is manufactured in the adrenal glands and synthesized from cholesterol.  They are small glands alongside to the kidneys. The hormone cortisol is released into the body during stress; hence it is called the "stress hormone." However cortisol is necessary for the overall function of the entire body.  It is when there is an excess of cortisol that there is excess stress so when cortisol is secreted and remains in the bloodstream over prolonged periods of time, one may lose bone mass, or experience increased blood pressure, suppressed thyroid function, and weakened cognitive performance. The consequences of sustained cortisol levels include a compromised immune response as well as increased inflammation in the muscle tissue, hyperglycemia, and increased abdominal fat.

The proper balancing of the physical, and then emotional body are key to recovery, and good health. We need both but they need to be in balance, and yoga works directly at balancing them.
